Gardening: How to choose the best plants to grow indoors. A great time to stock up.

How to choose indoor plants by Gabriela Delworth

Visits to garden centers happen quite often. I absolutely love looking around at plants.
Always on the look out for new ones to learn about. Although it is still Summer and Balcony Gardening is in full swing I am thinking about indoor gardening.

I have posted about the plants we grow, the best time to grow your collection, how to make the most of what you have, the plant stands in our balcony, latest finds and hanging railing baskets. Also posted about highrise balcony gardening and best plants to choose.

Did you notice that outdoor plants are fast disappearing from your garden centre? Much earlier this year I believe. Usually this happens in August. Is it because climate change?  May be...During my last visit to The Home Depot (one of my favorite places to buy plants. Got these ones there) I saw a great variety of indoor ones.

Plants need to "acclimatize" to new environments the same way we do. It would be a great time to bring some home now that central heating is off. It would definitely help during this process. Think about the shock plants go through going from a greenhouse to your place unless you have one!

Choosing plants is fun but remember that any garden takes a lot of planning. There are many factors to keep in mind when choosing them: care, location and sun exposure.

  • How easy will be to care for them?
  • How much time are you willing to give them?
  • Will you be home to water them?
  • Where are you going to place them?
  • How much sun do they need?
My most favorite indoor plant is the Peace Lily. They bloom year round. A beautiful plant! A natural air purifier that also adds moisture. We have a few of them. They thrive in low light. Ideal for our homes in the North during dark long Winters! See them on the photo above on the upper right corner? A great addition to your collection.

Happy gardening!
